1. There are thin walls in apartments,
so you can hear your roommates or neighbors through the walls
- This problem exists because it is
cheaper for the apartment complexes to build walls that are thin or have
limited installation between them.
2. After 6pm on campus it is hard to find parking
by the library
- This problem exists because parking
lifts at 5 pm so you don’t need a parking pass to park on campus. It is also
because students typically want to study in the libraries at night.
3. The gates in my apartment complex
are always broken. They stay open all the time instead of being closed
- This problem exists because
residents hit the gate and the apartment complex does not have repair men that
come out and fix the gate in a timely manner.
4. I always have issues using
ProctorU for my exams. The issues consist of not being able to connect
correctly to the proctors, having to wait over 10 minutes to get an available
proctor, and ProctorU having technical issues that delay when I can start my exam
- This problem exists for two
reasons. First ProctorU does not have enough proctors to handle high volume
testing hours and they don’t keep they technology update and working. The
second reason is because UF doesn’t provide classrooms for some online class
exams. There are only a few professors who fight to have the exams taken in
person compared to online.
5. When I cook on my stove all the
grease in the pan collects on one side and makes it hard to evenly cook my food
- This problem exists because over
time the coals on my stove have bent and lean to one side. They are no longer a
flat surface to cook on.
6. The sticky tape provided with a
corkboard I bought does not stick to the corkboard. Therefore, the corkboard
falls off the wall after a few hours
- This problem exists because the
back of the corkboards is a foam material that the adhesive tape does not stick
to well. Therefore, it only stays adhered for a few hours and then peals off
and the corkboard falls.
7. I can never burn the last of the
wax in my candles
- This problem exists because the
wick of the candle does not burn at the bottom.
8. My sink clogs up with water often
- This problem exists because the
drain in my sink is not big enough to drain the water as fast as it is coming
out of the faucet.
9. It is very difficult to trim the goat’s
hooves
- This problem exists because it is
hard to hold the goats still and distract them so you can trim their hooves.
10. I can never get the last of the
essential oils out of the bottle
- This problem exists because the
design of the bottle. There is a lip that the last few drops of oil cannot make
it over and there is no way to remove the top from the container.
11. After a few months of wear and
tear the cord to charge my iPhone breaks and I must replace it
- This problem exists because the rubber
connection between the cord and the port is not thick enough to keep the wires
from bending and breaking.
12. My dresser drawers do not stay closed.
They open at random times
- This problem exists because the
magnetic on the drawers is not strong enough to continually keep the drawer
closed when there are a lot of clothes in it.
13. My back pack can never sit up straight,
and it is constantly falling over
- This problem exists because there
is an extra pocket located at the top front of the bag. When you put items in
this pocket it makes the bag top heavy and therefore harder to stand up
straight.
14. When I go down to the recycling
barrels to take out the recycling, they are always full and over flowing
- This problem exists because the
waste company does not come often enough to collect the recycling or there are
not enough recycling barrels for our complex.
15. Bedroom door jamming
- This problem exists because the door
handle is old and gets stuck when you turn it a certain way. The handle is old
because the apartment complex will not replace them until it is a big problem
or concern.
16. Loud dishwasher
- This problem exists because the
apartment complex has bought cheaper dish washers that make a lot of noise. The
design of the apartment also places the dishwasher in the middle of the
apartment so the noise travels to all the rooms.
17. Heals give blisters
- This problem exists because the
fabric the shoes are made of is a hard fabric that is hard to mold. So, the
first couple of times you wear the shoes the fabric does not adjust to the shape
of your foot and instead rubs until it forms a blister.
18. Getting into the Heavener advising
office during drop/add or class registration
- This problem exists because there
are only 8 advisors for an approximate 4,000 students. That is 500 students per
advisor.
19. iPhone screens cracking easily
- This problem exists because of how
the screens are designed. They wrap around the edges of the phone exposing the
corners and allowing a drop to shatter the glass.
20. Fire alarm going off even without
a fire or fire hazard
- This is a problem because the fire
alarms in my apartment are set too sensitive and go off even when you open the
oven when it is set too high.
Reflection:
I found this assignment to be moderately
difficult to complete. I approached it by doing a few bugs at a time. The
problem I ran into was that even though I worked on the assignment about 4 different
times, I was always sitting in my apartment when I was working on it. I kept
thinking of the same problems over and over again. The first 12 bugs were easy to think of but
after that I had to start thinking of other areas of my life where bugs may exist.
I thought about when I was on campus and back in my home town mostly.
Working on the assignment multiple
times, instead of all at once, did make the assignment easier. By starting the assignment
early, I was able to look at it once a day until I listed 20 different bugs. If
I had done it all at once I believe it would have taken me almost twice the
amount of time, I spent on it.
Hey Catherine! I thought that your post was very thoughtful. I think that the first bug on your list is very relatable. I think the issues you presented about parking and advising space on campus have the potential to be solved. I wish i had thought of the backpack bug, that always bothers me. Also, I had trouble thinking of 20 bugs in life all in one sitting.
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine, you thought of a lot of small bugs that I didn't even think about, but were so true. I get blisters on my heels all the time from new shoes, even if I only wear the pair for an hour. My iPhone chargers also always break, and my dresser drawers sometimes won't close (but I think that's my own fault because I fill them with too many clothes). I wish I had spread the assignment out and did it over a longer period of time, because sitting down to do it all at once was a lot to manage.
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine,
ReplyDeleteI also had difficulty coming up with bugs. When we are in our rooms and nothing is bothering us, it is hard to think about those every day little things that pose slight annoyances. It helped to be more aware of these things in completing the assignment. This way I could go back and finish while thinking back on my day and having the bugs in mind.
