Assignment #7 Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Opportunity: Students and young adults lose their keys while out partying and can't get back into their dorm/apartment/house late at night. They put their keys in their pocket or purse and at some point in the night do to moving through crowds and dancing their keys fall out of their pocket or purse.

Who: College student and young adults who go out and drink at bars, clubs, and house parties.

What: They lose their keys and are unable to get back into their dorm/apartment/house late at night.

Why: They put their keys in unsecured places like their pockets or purses and they fall out during the night because they are moving through crowds and dancing.

Interviews: I interviewed different students on campus. I thought it would be best to interview students while they were sober since this is when they would be buying to product. I felt that if I went to the bars people would be more likely to agree with it simply because they were drunk and in a good mood.

  1. My first interview was with a sophomore female. She agreed that there was a problem with people loosing their keys while out drinking. She was most willing to wear the bracelet version of the product as long as it was fashionable and would go with her outfit. She stated that she would also be interested in something that would keep you from losing your phone and ID as well. The biggest comment she had was that for her to wear it, it had to be cute and fashionable.
  2. My second interview was with a senior female. She agreed that the problem existed but thought that it applied to men more than female. She also thought that underclass man who are more likely to get extremely drunk would be more likely to need a product like this. She personally would not buy this product because she does not have the problem because she controls how much she drinks. I suggested adding the phone and ID and she said that it would be too much. If anything stick to just the key. Out of the options available she would use the clip if she had the problem. But again it would need to be fashionable.
  3. My third interview was with a sophomore male. He agreed that the problem existed. He thought that females would be most likely to wear the anklet because it does not interfere with their outfits as much. He also thought that the bracelet would be risky because it could easily be pulled off or fall off while dancing. He personally would use the clip. He really liked the idea of not having to worry about where his key is. He suggested to make the clip fashion forward and in different materials such as metals and leather. He also added that he thinks the problem applies to anyone who goes out not just college students and young adults.
  4.  My forth interview was with a junior male. He thought that the problem did not exist. He said that he simply keeps his key a mat or in a hiding place so he doesn't even need to bring it with him. I suggested what if he lived in a dorm and didn't have a safe place to stash a key. He said in that case he would be willing to buy a product like this. He was most interested in the clip.
  5. My fifth interview was with a graduate female. She agreed that the problem existed but mainly for college students. She did not think that the problem applied to young adults or people who went out to drink regularly. She said she would buy a product like this as long as it wasn't bulky and had a good style. She wouldn't want it to clash with her outfit. She said she would  only be interested if it was just for keys. She made the point that with a key you only have it out when you lock your home and when you return. With a phone or ID you are constantly taking it out and putting it back so it would be a hassle. She said that she would not feel comfortable just leaving a key under a mat or hidden place. In apartments so many people are around it would be easy for someone to notice you put the key somewhere and use it get into your home. She also mentioned that some people don't have spare keys to do this with.
Summary of what I found: I found the interviews very interesting. I learned a lot about who the problem applied to and what people would be willing to buy. Some people were more excited about the product than others. I think it depends on how much of a problem this was for each person and their experiences. Most people said that whether it was a bracelet, anklet, or clip it would need to be fashionable and not bulky. Most people were interested in a clip. I found it interesting that one person didn't even bring their keys out with them. To me this is risky but I think it highly depends on where you live and how safe your area is. I still believe this is a problem and this could be a potential product that customers would buy.

Assignment #8 Solving the Problem

Opportunity:Students and young adults lose their keys while out partying and can't get back into their dorm/apartment/house late at night. They put their keys in their pocket or purse and at some point in the night do to moving through crowds and dancing their keys fall out of their pocket or purse.

Solution: My solution is to create a fashionable anklet, bracelet, and clip that the customer can place a key or fob on and then wear. This way the key or fob can be securely attached to the customer and they do not have to worry about losing it. There will be different designs and styles for males and females. The bracelet and ankle will mainly be designed for females to wear but will be provided in colors that males would be willing to wear. The clips will also be provided in both male and female colors but they will mostly be marketed towards males to put on their belt loops or attach to their shoe. I feel that having the key or fob attached to the customer instead of in a pocket or purse there will be a lower chance of losing it.

Assignment #6 Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic Trend: Climate change is causing more natural disasters
-          I believe an opportunity exists because there is clear data that shows that the rise in global temperatures is due to an increase in greenhouse gases. This rise in temperature is causing food prices to increase, more natural disasters, and more. An opportunity here lies in the creation of renewable energy.
-          The prototypical customer is everyday energy users as well as governments. Renewable energy can be used in cars and homes which will affect most people around the country.
-          I believe this opportunity will be relatively difficult to exploit because it will take a lot of money up front to fund research and development and also to compete with already existing companies that produce renewable energy. I still see a lot of potential in this market.
-          My uncle is a big proponent of renewable energy. He is constantly learning about it, keeping up with all the research, and telling us all about it. Because of this I understand that even though there are some big names in renewable energy there is still a lot of room for growth and new entrants. There is just a high investment barrier to enter.

Economic Trend: Interest rates rising
-          I believe an opportunity exists here because interest rates are rising because the economy is in a strong place and unemployment is low. This means that more people have jobs and money to spend and put back into the economy. This is a great time for people to invest and start companies.
-          The prototypical customer is those who are looking to invest in new businesses and those who are looking for investors.
-          I believe this opportunity will be relatively easy to pursue as long as people are willing to commit.
-          I saw the effects of high interest rates this past weekend when I was purchasing a new car. Even though I have a great credit score the interest rate I received for my loan was rather high. But even though the rising interest rates was not great for me in this situation, others can capitalize on the opportunity.

Regulatory Trend: Increase in tariffs
-          I believe an opportunity exists here for manufactures to come back to the US. With tariffs getting so high CNBC estimates that it will cost Americans $915 each in 2019 in raised prices. This is a huge incentive for companies to bring manufacturing back to the US even though the prices will not be able to drop as low as they were before the tariffs.
-          The prototypical customer is people who can work in a factory and those who buy the goods. Companies that outsource their manufacturing are also affected by the rise in tariffs.
-          I believe this opportunity will be relatively difficult because it involves moving a lot of operations and people. Logistics will be a huge factor in whether companies decide to pursue this opportunity or not.
-         This past summer I worked for Chewy.com an online pet retailer. While I was there I learned a lot about the operations and logistics side of manufacturing a product and then getting it to the customer. A lot of the private label products were manufactured outside of the country and so with the new tariffs their prices will need to be increased if the company wants to receive the same return. If the products were produced in the US there would not be a need to increase prices and the logistics will become easier.

Regulator Trend: New USMCA trade agreement
-          This new trade agreement provides an opportunity to expand car manufacturing in North America. With requiring 75% of the vehicle components needing to be made in North America it opens up a need for more car manufacturers.
-          The prototypical customers are those who will be purchasing the vehicles, those who work in car manufacturing, and car manufacturers.
-          I believe the opportunity will be relatively easy to exploit because there are already manufacturers here they simply need to expand. This will also limit the amount of parts bought from outside the US and customers should be able to get a decent price for a car because there will be less tariffs imposed on the materials.
-          I see this opportunity because I truly feel that we can bring back jobs to the US in a way that will be beneficial to manufacturers as well as customers. As more tariffs are being imposed the cost of outsourcing will increase and it will start to be most cost effective to make products within the US without outsourcing.

Assignment #5 Identifying Local Opportunities

“Peril for pedestrians on rise in this region “ - Sarasota Herald Tribune
·       This article discusses how Florida is ranked as the most dangerous state for pedestrians, and that the Sarasota-Manatee region has risen to the 4th most dangerous metropolitan area for walkers. They have recorded 235 pedestrian deaths from 2008- 2017 for the Sarasota-Bradenton-North Port area. The article reports the top ten most dangerous metropolitan areas for pedestrians. The list is created by comparing the annual pedestrian fatalities to the metropolitan areas’ total populations. Eight of the top 10 are regions in Florida. Pedestrian deaths nationwide have increased by 35%, with 2016 and 2017 being the highest years since 1990. The high-risk areas and people are those who are in the south continental United States, older adults, people of color, and people walking in low-income communities. The article concludes by giving quotes from the county’s commissioner on how she plans to combat this rising problem.
·       The Problem: The problem is that the roads are too congested with vehicles and there are not enough sidewalks and safe bike lanes for pedestrians to use. The problem is also poor lighting on sidewalks and cross walks that are not noticeable to drivers.
·       The People: The people affected are those that live in metropolitan areas in Florida and walk or bike often in the city. This problem also affects the state and city governments that are in charge of keeping the people safe and providing safe ways to travel in the cities.

“Sarasota plastic bag foes eye a ban” - Sarasota Herald Tribune
·       This article discusses the issue of banning the use of plastic bags to help protect the environment. The article begins by explaining that legislature had taken into consideration banning the use of plastic bags over a decade ago and even had the idea evaluated by the Department of Environment Protection. The evaluation found that it would be beneficial to the environment to ban plastic bags. But even after this report was released Legislature has refused to review it or take any bills concerning it into consideration. But recently cities such as Boston, Seattle, and Santa Fe have eliminated plastic bag use. Some cities in Florida such as Coral Gables and Gainesville are beginning to set things in place to reduce the use of plastic bags but there is resistance from many retail stores such as 7-Eleven. The sustainability program educator of for the City of Sarasota says they are determining the best way to implement a ban on plastic bags so when the day comes that it is passed they are ready.
·       The Problem: Too many plastic bags are being used and end up in the water ways. Plastic bags take years to decompose so if we continue to use them the way we are there is going to be a large build up not only in the dumps but also into the environment.
·       The People: The people affected are those who live around water ways and can see the build up of plastic bags and what it is doing to the environment. People who use plastic bags are also affected because they will need to find an alternative way to carry their things if the bags are banned. The animals in the environment are also affected.

“’Red tide tickle’ returns – Respiratory irritation possible at some Sarasota County beaches this weekend- Sarasota Herald Tribune
·       This article discusses red tide and how it is creeping back into the Sarasota-Manatee-Venice area after being gone for a little over a month. High cell counts of the toxic algae Karenia brevis has been causing respiratory issues for some visitors at Sarasota County beaches. Of the 16 county beaches only two had no traces of red tide. The article lists the beaches with high to medium levels of red tide and those with little traces.  The article explains that westerly winds blow surface water with red tide closer to shore and that the colder weather is not helping get rid of the red tide. Red tide is only affected when the water reaches temperatures of 60 degrees which rarely happens in this area. No fish have been reported to be killed from this flare up of red tide.
·       The Problem: The high levels of toxic bacteria in the water has caused respiratory issues for those who live around the beaches. The bacteria is caused from run off of pesticides into the water that causes the bacteria to grow.
·       The People: The people affected are those who live around the beach, those who come to visit Florida and see the beaches, and the business owners around the beach.

“Workplace safety violations at UM dining hall add up to a proposed $134,000 in fines” – Miami Herald
·       The article discusses safety violation at a dinning hall at the University of Miami. The article begins by stating that there was an inspection done in August 2018 that resulted in a fine of $134,880 for three safety violations. Two of the violations were classified as repeat offenses. Compass Group USA is the company the runs multiple dinning halls around the country. They have 15 days to either pay or enter a payment plan, request an informal conference with the area OSHA director, or contest the findings. The violations are all employee safety related.
·       The Problem: Compass Group USA does not provide the employees of their dinning halls with safety equipment, safe exits, or effective training. This can all lead to injuries by the employees.
·       The People: The people affected are the employees who work for Compass Group USA.

“Internet buying is killing the malls, reminding some shoppers that malls killed the downtowns” – Tampa Bay Times
·       This article discusses how online shopping is taking away shoppers from malls, just like malls took shoppers away form downtown. The article begins by explaining how malls are starting to lose big stores like Sears and JC Penny or the whole complex because of online shopping. But this isn’t the first big change in how and where people are shopping. Before malls everyone went downtown to shop. People would walk around eat and visit stores. A lot of the stores that were popular then don’t even exist anymore. The article goes on to end by give testimony from those who remember when downtown was the place to shop. They give their opinions and reminisce on those old times.
·       The Problem: Online retailers such as amazon are allowing customers to shop from the comfort of their homes and less are going out to stores to buy the things they need. This is causing malls to see low sales and profits and stores to close.
·       The People: The people affected are those who work within the malls and other physical stores.

Assignment #2 Bug List

1. There are thin walls in apartments, so you can hear your roommates or neighbors through the walls
- This problem exists because it is cheaper for the apartment complexes to build walls that are thin or have limited installation between them.
2.  After 6pm on campus it is hard to find parking by the library
- This problem exists because parking lifts at 5 pm so you don’t need a parking pass to park on campus. It is also because students typically want to study in the libraries at night.
3. The gates in my apartment complex are always broken. They stay open all the time instead of being closed
- This problem exists because residents hit the gate and the apartment complex does not have repair men that come out and fix the gate in a timely manner.
4. I always have issues using ProctorU for my exams. The issues consist of not being able to connect correctly to the proctors, having to wait over 10 minutes to get an available proctor, and ProctorU having technical issues that delay when I can start my exam
- This problem exists for two reasons. First ProctorU does not have enough proctors to handle high volume testing hours and they don’t keep they technology update and working. The second reason is because UF doesn’t provide classrooms for some online class exams. There are only a few professors who fight to have the exams taken in person compared to online.
5. When I cook on my stove all the grease in the pan collects on one side and makes it hard to evenly cook my food
- This problem exists because over time the coals on my stove have bent and lean to one side. They are no longer a flat surface to cook on.
6. The sticky tape provided with a corkboard I bought does not stick to the corkboard. Therefore, the corkboard falls off the wall after a few hours
- This problem exists because the back of the corkboards is a foam material that the adhesive tape does not stick to well. Therefore, it only stays adhered for a few hours and then peals off and the corkboard falls.
7. I can never burn the last of the wax in my candles
- This problem exists because the wick of the candle does not burn at the bottom.
8. My sink clogs up with water often
- This problem exists because the drain in my sink is not big enough to drain the water as fast as it is coming out of the faucet.
9. It is very difficult to trim the goat’s hooves
- This problem exists because it is hard to hold the goats still and distract them so you can trim their hooves.
10. I can never get the last of the essential oils out of the bottle
- This problem exists because the design of the bottle. There is a lip that the last few drops of oil cannot make it over and there is no way to remove the top from the container.
11. After a few months of wear and tear the cord to charge my iPhone breaks and I must replace it
- This problem exists because the rubber connection between the cord and the port is not thick enough to keep the wires from bending and breaking.
12. My dresser drawers do not stay closed. They open at random times
- This problem exists because the magnetic on the drawers is not strong enough to continually keep the drawer closed when there are a lot of clothes in it.
13. My back pack can never sit up straight, and it is constantly falling over
- This problem exists because there is an extra pocket located at the top front of the bag. When you put items in this pocket it makes the bag top heavy and therefore harder to stand up straight.
14. When I go down to the recycling barrels to take out the recycling, they are always full and over flowing
- This problem exists because the waste company does not come often enough to collect the recycling or there are not enough recycling barrels for our complex.
15. Bedroom door jamming
- This problem exists because the door handle is old and gets stuck when you turn it a certain way. The handle is old because the apartment complex will not replace them until it is a big problem or concern.
16. Loud dishwasher
- This problem exists because the apartment complex has bought cheaper dish washers that make a lot of noise. The design of the apartment also places the dishwasher in the middle of the apartment so the noise travels to all the rooms.
17. Heals give blisters
- This problem exists because the fabric the shoes are made of is a hard fabric that is hard to mold. So, the first couple of times you wear the shoes the fabric does not adjust to the shape of your foot and instead rubs until it forms a blister.
18. Getting into the Heavener advising office during drop/add or class registration
- This problem exists because there are only 8 advisors for an approximate 4,000 students. That is 500 students per advisor.
19. iPhone screens cracking easily
- This problem exists because of how the screens are designed. They wrap around the edges of the phone exposing the corners and allowing a drop to shatter the glass.
20. Fire alarm going off even without a fire or fire hazard
- This is a problem because the fire alarms in my apartment are set too sensitive and go off even when you open the oven when it is set too high.
Reflection:
I found this assignment to be moderately difficult to complete. I approached it by doing a few bugs at a time. The problem I ran into was that even though I worked on the assignment about 4 different times, I was always sitting in my apartment when I was working on it. I kept thinking of the same problems over and over again.  The first 12 bugs were easy to think of but after that I had to start thinking of other areas of my life where bugs may exist. I thought about when I was on campus and back in my home town mostly.
Working on the assignment multiple times, instead of all at once, did make the assignment easier. By starting the assignment early, I was able to look at it once a day until I listed 20 different bugs. If I had done it all at once I believe it would have taken me almost twice the amount of time, I spent on it.

Assignment #3 - My Entrepreneurship Story

Back at home I live on a 50 acre farm. We have horses, cows, goats, dogs, and chickens. At first, we had the animals simply as pets, but now that all my siblings and I are out of high school my mom has been thinking of ways to make money from our animals. She currently has over 100 chickens that she takes care of and collects and sells their eggs. This venture is for fun and the money she makes from the eggs she puts back into the feed for the chickens. They pay for themselves as we like to call it. Over the last year or so though, we have started to think of ways we could make a profit and we decided on breeding goats.
We are currently breeding our goats and expecting babies in February. Our plan is to offer goat yoga classes to those in our community for a month after the babies are born. Then after a month we will sell the babies but continue to milk the mothers and produce farm fresh goat soap and goat cheese to sell.  It has been exciting planning how we are going to do everything over the last few months. The biggest thing I found was making sure there were people who wanted to buy baby goats as well as natural goat products. We found that the market for both is rather large. I am excited for the babies to be here and actually start making some money by doing things my mom and I both love.
At first, I enrolled in ENT3003 simply because it fulfilled one of my requirements to graduate. After looking at the class syllabus and watching the first few lectures though I got excited about what I was going to learn in this class. In this class I hope to learn tools that will help me be successful as an entrepreneur as well as how to successful turn an idea into a business.
